#GivingTuesday

Happy Giving Tuesday everyone!

During this very special day thousands of non-profit organizations throughout the country receive generous donations from community members and activists like you! These gifts do help tremendously and give non-profit organizations the opportunity to continue their very important work and mission. This #GivingTuesday, please consider giving to a local non-profit organization like Casa de Amistad!

Casa de Amistad has played a very important role in the history of Athens. Since 2000 we have helped thousands of Latino/Hispanic community members with FREE emergency and education services.

This community is rapidly growing and makes up a very essential part of our culture, and our city!

During these very difficult times, stand up with our Latino/Hispanic brothers and sisters. Most of them fear for their families and their future in this country. Show them that you care about them and that their issues are our issues too!

This #GivingTuesday donate to Casa de Amistad. Your donation is tax-deductible and 100% of it goes directly to addressing the needs of our Latino/Hispanic community through adult education services.

#UNSELFIE

We also encourage you to share your #unselfie story with us on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook! Make a donation and post a picture holding a sign that shares your reason for supporting Casa de Amistad with the hashtags #GiivingTuesday and #unselfie. Tag us on your post (@athensamistad) so we can give you a shout-out! And please share the link to donate! See example below.

Giving Tuesday is a national day of giving - a chance for generous Americans to support their favorite organization. We need all members of the Casa de Amistad community (that means you!) to help us continue our mission next year.

Statement from Casa de Amistad regarding CDBG funding

Casa de Amistad would like to thank the ACC for their consideration of our CDBG grant for 2016 and their support over the past several years. The misunderstanding regarding our eligibility and grant application has wasted a lot of people's time on both sides. We would not have gone forward with the rigorous application process had we known we were not eligible. Nor would we have continued to meet with commissioners and gain public support. We feel our case for funding is worthy and we are disappointed to be deemed ineligible at this stage in the process.

All staff, past and present board members, and our community partners feel strongly about the services that Casa offers to the Latino community. Alex, the departing director, has provided these services directly to hundreds of people seeking help and overseen thousands of volunteer hours for the past 4 years. Those seeking help from Casa have NO WHERE else in the area to seek these services, free of charge to all and free of any other obligation. Any funds that might be available at the commission’s discretion would go to fund materials, software and labor to provide these services for the most vulnerable population in Athens.

The Latino population is an important and growing demographic for Clarke County. In our opinion, the support for this community is necessary to build a better future for all of us. We are also aware that there are other services available to this under-served population but NONE that are of no cost to the participants and which are dedicated to this growing but stressed community. Our hope is that with public awareness, stemming from Casa’s advocacy compassion will win the day and as soon as Casa is eligible; CDBG funds will be secured.
