November 2023 volunteers of the month

Congratulations to our volunteer of the month: Marcelo A. Buril! Marcelo goes above and beyond helping our students. We appreciate you!

Fun facts about Marcelo:
1) “Like to play soccer with my teenage son on Saturdays.”
2) “I am the lead guitar and singer of a local blues band, The Original Screw Tops.”

Why Marcelo loves volunteering with Casa: “I have a genuine affinity for engaging in conversations, connecting with new people, and actively supporting my community. With over 24 years of residency in Athens, I’ve come to appreciate the city’s diversity and vibrant atmosphere. When the opportunity arose to volunteer for a program that welcomes newcomers while respecting their backgrounds, I eagerly embraced it. Notably, 24 years ago, I was an immigrant myself, navigating language and culture, and now I find myself volunteering for similar classes. It’s fulfilling to give back and contribute to such a great cause.”

Congratulations to our volunteer of the month: Logan Williamson! Logan goes above and beyond helping our students. We appreciate you!

Fun facts about Logan:
1) “I once got lost inside the White House (well technically the Eisenhower Office Building).”
2) “My twin Elliot and I were born on Thanksgiving.”

Why Logan loves volunteering with Casa: “I love volunteering at Casa de Amistad because the organization 1) creates a community of volunteers and attendees, 2) forms the community with some of the nicest, most positive people in Athens, and then 3) does whatever it can to support this community, whether it is English, GRE, community events, or even having food during difficult times. I first started volunteering with Casa de Amistad in Summer, 2021. The pandemic was still affecting every aspect of life, including food security. Though it was blazing hot, I loved helping in the food distributions and loved the common mission of all the volunteers. This year, I started coming to Casa’s English tutoring in the July summer camp and have continued through the semester. Whenever I get the chance, I spread the word to other UGA students of how wonderful Casa is and how easy it is to get involved!”

October 2023 volunteer of the month

Congratulations to our volunteer of the month: Jacqueline Lira-Catillo! Jacqueline has gone above and beyond to support our teachers and students in our Wednesday Zoom class! She is always enthusiastic in class and eagerly willing to support in any way she can.

Some fun facts about Jacqueline:
1) “I spontaneously decided to drive to Kentucky and back to see Bruno Mars perform live.”
2) “I love art and got the chance to help paint a mural for a shelter in Athens.”

Why Jacqueline loves volunteering with Casa: “I love volunteering at Casa de Amistad because of the way I can see people advancing in their English skills. I also love volunteering because I can practice my Spanish skills with the speakers/students!”
